Marvel's latest blockbuster and 7 other movies and shows to watch this week

Chicago Town

A very interesting week of new (and old) stuff to enjoy this weekend!

Every week, we pick out the best/most interesting new shows and movies for you to check out at home, and also sometimes the stuff you should be actively avoiding.

The latest episode of The Big Reviewski can be watched in full below or you can skip to the cinema reviews (3:45), home entertainment recommendations (13:45), and classic re-watches (19:50).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 3 September.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

The next big blockbuster from Marvel and Disney is finally here, featuring the MCU's first Asian lead (Simu Liu), as Shang-Chi, the son of an all-powerful crime lord, forced to fight against his own family in order to save the world as we know it. Read our full review here.

We chatted to the movie's titular star, Simu Liu, which you can check out below, as well as his co-star and the movie's director, both of which you can check out right here.

ANNETTE

Oscar-nominee Adam Driver and Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard star in this movie about parents who discover their magically-powered daughter might be the key to saving the world. But this isn't a superhero movie! Instead, it is a musical-drama written by the Sparks Brothers, and it recently won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.

WILDFIRE

A powerful Irish drama revolving around two sisters (Nora-Jane Noone and the late Nika McGuigan) who are reunited following the death of their mother, but they both soon discover they don't know their own family as well as they thought they did. McGuigan won Best Actress for her performance at this year's IFTAs.

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with...

HE'S ALL THAT

Remember She's All That? Well, this is pretty much that movie, except with all of the parts gender reversed. A high-school girl (Addison Rae) tries to get back at her recent ex by giving a boy (Tanner Buchanan) in her class a glow up and helping him win Prom King.

The movie is available to watch on Netflix right now.

KEVIN CAN F**K HIMSELF

Schitt's Creek star Annie Murphy plays the perfect sit-com wife who comes to the slowly dawning realisation that she actually wants nothing more than to kill her own husband. An incredibly dark, uncomfortable comedy with a brilliant central performance by Murphy.

All eight episodes are available to watch on Prime Video right now.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING

Three podcast enthusiasts (Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez) begin their own true-crime podcast when someone is murdered in their own upper-class Manhattan apartment building. However, it turns out that each of them are hiding something, with some direct ties to the murder victim himself...

The first two episodes are available to watch on Disney+ right now, with the rest of the season arriving weekly every Wednesday.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section...

Last week, Eoghan went with School of Rock, while Rory went with Aliens, and Eoghan came away with almost twice the votes that Rory got, proving he's having a bit of a winning streak lately. Will it continue?

Here are this week's picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE's Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory's Pick - 28 WEEKS LATER

Arguably one of the most under-appreciated sequels of all time, the horror picks up after the US government has helped get the zombie outbreak in the UK under control and they begin reintroducing the population to the now-empty cities. But things don't stay calm for long. Jeremy Renner, Idris Elba, Rose Byrne and Imogen Poots star.

28 Weeks Later has recently been added to Disney+. (As has 28 Days Later, just FYI.)

Eoghan's Pick - OLD SCHOOL

Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn star in this hilarious comedy about a group of grown men who decide to attempt to recapture their glory days of partying by setting up a new fraternity near where they all went to college decades earlier.

Old School has recently been added to Netflix.
