Ryan Reynolds' merc with a mouth assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with supernatural abilities from the time-traveling cyborg Cable (Josh Brolin).


The Magnificent Seven - ITV 4 - 9pm


A remake of the classic western of the same name starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke.


It would make a cool double bill with Sergio Leone's epic western A Fistful of Dynamite, which is airing on the same channel at 11.45pm

About Time -  RTÉ2 - 9.55pm


Our own Domhnall Gleeson stars in this romantic comedy-drama with sci-fi elements from the writer-director of Love Actually.


The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Alibi - 10pm

In our pick for this evening, journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a young computer hacker.


Directed by David Fincher (Seven, Zodiac), the US version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an incredible take on the 2005 bestselling novel, adapting it with the budget and stars of a Hollywood production without shying away from the source material's darkness.

The American President - TG4 - 10pm


In this comedy-drama penned by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), a widowed US President (Michael Douglas) running for reelection and an environmental lobbyist (Annette Benning) fall in love.


White House Down - Dave - 10pm

Speaking of presidents, in this action blockbuster a Capitol policeman on a tour of the White House with his young daughter must spring into action to save his child and protect the US President (Jamie Foxx) from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.

War of the Worlds - Channel 4 - 10.10pm


Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise adapt H.G. Wells' legendary sci-fi novel.


First Love - Film 4 - 11.15pm


A young boxer and a call girl get caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo in this crime thriller from prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike.

The Killing Fields - RTÉ One - 11.55pm


This '80s best picture nominee at the Oscars tells the true story of a journalist's struggle for survival amidst the ravages of war in Cambodia.


The Deer Hunter - BBC One - 12.05am


Christopher Walken and Robert De Niro star in this iconic Vietnam War drama, which earned the former an Oscar.
