Sydney Sweeney Says Comments About ‘Euphoria’ Director Were ‘Twisted’

Sydney Sweeney Says Comments About ‘Euphoria’ Director Were ‘Twisted’

In January, actress Sydney Sweeney commented on her feature in HBO’S acclaimed drama “Euphoria,” which recently premiered its second season. The new release had all the elements of HBO’s mature content, including several nude scenes involving the actors.

At the time, Sweeney complained that some of the nude scenes were not necessary to convey the script’s narrative. She also added that director Sam Levinson did not compel her to get unclad at any time.

However, the twisted headlines that ensued from her comments have prompted the actress to clarify the whole ordeal and state what she truly meant.

Sam Levinson Is Respectful Of The Cast

Sweeney has come out to say that the public misunderstood her comments. “I never asked him to cut any scenes,” she said in a recent edition of Teen Vogue‘s New Hollywood. “It got twisted and turned, and it became its own beast, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.'”

The actress then explained the message she was trying to convey at the time. “It was more how respectful Sam is and how incredible of a director he is, that he would never make me do something I didn’t feel comfortable with,” Sweeney said.

“I think [nudity is] important to the storyline and the character. There’s a purpose to what that character is going through. That’s the character. We all get naked in real life. We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.”

While Sweeney’s Cassie is expecting to return in season three of “Euphoria,” it might take a while for this to occur, given that the showrunners at HBO just recently greenlit the production of the next installment.

Most actors, know that nudity is sometimes a necessary story device to convey a script’s message. However, sometimes acting in such scenes could be uncomfortable. When such scenarios happened on the set of “Euphoria,” Levinson did not hesitate to rework the scenes to allow the actors to play the parts with their clothes.

For instance, when Minka Kelly asked that she remain clothed for a particular scene, Levinson obliged her request and reworked the part, to which the actress confirmed the change.

“He didn’t even hesitate, “Kelly said, referencing the time when she posed the question to Levinson. “And he shot a beautiful scene and got exactly what he wanted.”

Since participating in nude scenes could be challenging, the “Euphoria’s” showrunners employed an intimacy coordinator to assist the cast during those steamy moments.

Apart from coming to the defense of Levinson, Sweeney also discussed her character’s performance in “Euphoria” season two. Sweeney portrays Cassie Howard, who has an infamous sexual past that continues to trail her.

The actress admitted that she had read up on several online debates about Cassie and was happy that her character had generated much discussion on social media.

“I actually see debates about this online. I see debates about people who feel for Cassie and know she’s making wrong decisions but still see a broken girl trying to find something right. And then I see people like, ‘Nope, she is not making right decisions, I do not support her.’ I think [the response] is funny; I like it.”

Above all, Sweeney pointed out that Cassie was “willing to risk everything, even her own moral sanity, for something and someone who she hopes treats her the way she dreams of treating them.”

In the meantime, Sweeney has signed up to feature in a couple of film and tv series, including “Silver Star,” “National Anthem,” and “The Player Table.” Only Silver Star is currently in the production process, while the rest of the films are yet to be worked on.
