George Lopez compares Chris Rock and Will Smith feud to divorce

George Lopez likens Will Smith and Chris Rock’s feud to a divorce now that Hollywood is being forced to choose between the two “parents.”

“I’m staying with my dad and Chris Rock,” Lopez joked to People Wednesday.

Lopez backed up fellow comedian Rock, 57, after the “I Am Legend” star, 53, slapped him for making a joke at the 2022 Oscars about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness, which is due to her alopecia.

“Well, nobody’s been able to take a joke for the last five or six years,” Lopez noted of society’s sensitivity, adding that Rock is fortunate to have such great friends in the industry.

“I think what Wanda Sykes said on [‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’] was very, very powerful. They’ve been friends for a long time, and a comedian never really wants to show their vulnerability,” he said. “And I could tell that in Wanda, that it has affected her deeply that one of her best friends was struck like that.”

Rock himself stated in Boston Wednesday night that he was “still processing what happened” during his first stand-up set since Sunday’s awards ceremony.

Smith has attempted to rectify the situation with a Notes app apology posted to social media Monday. He is still awaiting the results of the Academy’s formal review of the incident after the organization condemned his behavior earlier this week.
