The DA’s office had recently referred Lee’s case involving Chappelle to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office after determining that the attack was a misdemeanor. The office’s statement at the time read, “After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors determined that while criminal conduct occurred, the evidence as presented did not constitute felony conduct.”

However, in a subsequent statement, Gascon revealed that they had connected Lee to another unsolved case. He said, “The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime… Based on the nature and severity of the December attack, Mr. Lee is now facing felony charges which my office will prosecute.”

Lee Pleaded Not Guilty To The Charges

On May 19th, Lee finally had his first day in trial for the attempted murder charges. He pled not guilty to the charge and is now scheduled to return again on June 2nd in Department 32 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. His case, which is titled BA505489, was filed for a warrant on May 18th.

On December 2nd, Lee allegedly stabbed his roommate during an argument that turned violent and then disappeared. But when the victim saw the trending media reports of Lee’s attack on Chappelle, he was able to identify Lee as the person who assaulted him in the case that he had previously reported.

23-year-old Lee is currently in custody while he awaits trial, and the Los Angeles police department is still investigating the case and any other leads that may connect Lee to other unsolved crimes.

Lee has also pleaded not guilty to his misdemeanor charges relating to his attack on Chappelle during the comedian’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl. His charges include battery, possessing a deadly weapon with intent to assault, unlawfully crossing from a spectator area onto a stage at a theatrical event, and interfering with or delaying such an event with unlawful conduct.

The judge also ordered Lee to stay a minimum of 100 yards away from Chappelle after his lawyer called into the hearing to request for a protective order. Lee was arrested after he rushed onto the stage during Chappelle’s performance for the “Netflix Is a Joke” comedy festival.

Authorities found several dangerous items on Lee, including a replica handgun that had a large blade with a similar mechanism to a pocket knife. It is not yet clear why Lee rushed the stage or his intentions.

Following the assault on Chappelle by Lee, there was an uproar on social media regarding the safety of comedians. People did not waste time in pointing fingers at Will Smith’s attack on Chris Rock at the Oscars as the reason behind Chappelle’s attack.

Smith’s infamous oscar slap is now being regarded as the cause of the domino effect, which according to many, will lead to the constant attack of comedians on stage.

After the attack by Lee, an unfazed Chappelle reclaimed the stage and immediately made a joke that his attacker was a trans man. Turns out Lee is infact not a trans man.

Chappelle is popularly known to not be in the good books of the Transgender community as a result of his stand-up shows, which seem to constantly poke fun at trans people. The comedian has come at loggerheads with the trans community for his insensitive jokes about them many times.

Netflix is also now at odds with the trans community, as the streaming giant has been accused of enabling  Chappelle’s transphobia by giving him such a huge platform to tell his transphobic jokes. Netflix also recently told their “woke” staff to take a hike if the working conditions weren’t suitable enough for them.
