Leto was on an adventure with climbing god Alex Honnold in March 2020 when he almost fell to his death. While this is common for climbers, this was Leto’s first time. He was climbing in Red Rock Canyon when the accident happened.

He took to Instagram that period to give details about the experience to fans. “Not to sound dramatic, but this is the day I nearly died. Took a pretty good fall climbing with @alexhonnold at Red Rock,” he said, tagging Honnold.

Leto explained that he was climbing when he “looked up” and realized that a rock had almost completely cut his safety rope while he dangled. “I dangled some 600 ft in the air. I remember looking down at the ground below,” he said.

While many fans expected Leto to have been afraid of falling to his death, he explained to Men’s Health in their most recent cover story with him that he wasn’t. He was uncomfortable with the possibility that he could die at that moment and very sad about it; however, he wasn’t scared of death itself.

Leto explained that what he felt was “less fear, more matter of fact.” He also noted that the dangling made him super uncomfortable, but the whole experience was “like an acceptance, and a little bit of sadness.” He continued, “It wasn’t even fear. It was like, ah, not now.”

The Experience Was Life-Changing

The near-death experience was life-changing for Leto as he confirmed that the encounter helped him get familiar with dying someday, even though he wasn’t ready for it. He noted how temporary most things in life were, including one’s health and abilities, and that as “one grows older, things change.”

“Your physical body might give out on you, or your brain,” he said, “and maybe then you turn away from some objectives and you can turn toward others,” he continued. “You can be a hundred years old and take a very deep, mindful breath. That probably has its own challenges and rewards.”

Apparently, Leto wasn’t scarred by the fall as he continued climbing with his partner after the experience. He has also expressed that he has no intention of stopping his rock-climbing career.
