Finca Serena, Mallorca - hotel review

Peace and quiet is the order of the day at Finca Serena, a new five-star boutique hotel set in 100 acres of countryside in Pla de Mallorca, the agricultural heart of the island.

The ivy-draped 18th-century farmhouse has been transformed to give it all the standards of a design-led luxury hotel, with minimalist bedrooms featuring polished grey concrete, whitewashed walls and soft linens. The land around the building is beautiful, with rows of newly-planted vines, lemon trees, and vegetable gardens providing walking opportunities.

There’s nothing flashy here, just a quiet escape from some of the more crowded parts of the island.

(Finca Serena) Do Despite its small size and its remote location, Finca Serena offers the full sweep of facilities. The focus has to be the outdoor pool, with plenty of comfy loungers and even a few prized shaded double beds. Then there’s the Unico spa. Here you’ll find a heated indoor pool, steam room, sauna, and a gym plus yoga and meditation classes. There’s a range of massages and Natura Bissé beauty treatments on offer too, and we were very impressed by the Quirosport massage — just the thing to relieve the stresses of London life.  (Finca Serena) Eat  All meals are served in the hotel’s Jacaranda restaurant using ingredients from the kitchen garden. The best is at breakfast:  a spread of local hams, fresh goat’s cheese, tomatoes, and Mallorca’s prized pastry, ensaïmada, from famed bakery Forn Can Salem in Algaida. At lunch too, the finest dishes are the simplest, like the crisp ham croquettes we washed down with a glass of slightly sweet Mallorcan red vermouth. Dinner menus change daily depending on what local produce is available. Starters such as ceviche or fresh salads from the garden were most successful, but mains such as grilled monkfish with cream sauce were perhaps a little overworked. All the same, the views and pretty tree-shaded outdoor terrace make for a pretty special dinner setting.  (Finca Serena) Which room? There are eight rooms in the main building, including some of the more expensive junior suites, which are spacious with big separate bathrooms. All rooms come with Finca Serena’s own natural bath products, and the beds are made up with luxurious natural linens and cotton throws. The rest of the rooms are spread across eight separate satellite buildings around the grounds, and although many of these are on the small side they compensate with outdoor terraces, incredible views and a sense of seclusion away from the main building.  (Finca Serena) Best for? Couples looking for a romantic getaway with a healthy dose of peace and quiet. Grab a glass of local vermouth on the terrace and take in the stunning views.
