An asylum seeker in the Direct Provision system has ended his hunger strike following assurances from the Department of Justice that he will not be deported.

Nadim Hussain was forced to leave his home country of India following the deaths of his parents in March of 2018.
He applied for refugee status and was placed in a Direct Provision centre in Cork until further notice.
Denied refugee status, Hussain subsequently waited several weeks for a response from the Department of Justice as he requested permission to stay in Ireland.
He began his hunger strike last Thursday (14 October) in an effort to receive the attention of Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys in order to to assure his safety.
Nadim's case has caught the attention of the Irish public and he shared his gratitude in a video shared to Twitter on Friday night following the ending of the hunger strike.

"Thank you people of Ireland for caring [for] me and helping me in this position," said Hussain in the video posted by the Abolish Direct Provision Campaign team.
"Just now, my legal team have informed me that [the] Minister of Justice has given assurance that I will not be deported.
"Thank you everyone of Ireland. Thanks from my heart and from my soul."
