The “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” could go on for quite a while if showrunner Jon Favreau has his way!
The critically acclaimed Disney+ series is currently in the middle of its third season, and Favreau has no plans for Din Djarin’s story to slow down any time soon.
Jon Favreau Opens Up About The Future Of ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Mandalorian’
Showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni recently stopped by Entertainment Weekly’s Star Wars podcast “Dagobah Dispatch” to talk about the popular series now that it’s halfway through its third season.
Favreau said that he is “having a blast” working on the series, adding, “I love working with Dave.” Favreau said that he also loves “how the characters develop over time,” adding, “I also love that there are other stories now being told in the same time period, like Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew.”
The role of Ahsoka Tano is going to be reprised by Rosario Dawson, who helped the animated character make her jump into live action in “The Mandalorian,” as well as “The Book of Boba Fett. “Skeleton Crew” stars actor Jude Law and tells the story of four children lost in the galaxy that are trying to find their way home.
Given that there are so many different spin-offs all occurring in the same time period, Favreau says that it “feels like there’s a large context for me to understand.” Given the timeline in a galaxy far, far away, Favreau knows that fans are well aware of what happens both before and after the events of “The Mandalorian.”
“There’s a lot to draw upon from additional stories that were told outside of what’s considered official canon now, but is held very dearly to the fans who’ve been at it for decades,” he added. “And so we like to take all of that into consideration.”
Although Favreau will not say definitively how many seasons “The Mandalorian” will have, he did hint that it could go on for a while yet. “I really have been enjoying this tremendously and I love these characters and I love seeing how they’re growing together,” he said.
Favreau Says He Loves Collaborating With Different Filmmakers And Storytellers
“I’ve really enjoyed working with this group of people and I love collaborating with all these different filmmakers and different storytellers, both from the directors we work with, and other showrunners like Dave and, and others like Jon Watts and Chris Ford,” he added.
Both Jon Watts and Chris Ford have been attached to “Skeleton Crew,” as have newly minted Oscar winners Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” who will direct at least one episode of the series.
Favreau loves working with a variety of directors on the series, which have included “Thor: Love and Thunder” director Taika Waititi and “Jurassic World” actress Bryce Dallas Howard. “It’s a really wonderful format, and you really grow to appreciate having such a good team around you that, for each new film, you would have to assemble,” he said. “But [with The Mandalorian] we get to inherit this great group of talented people that we could work with every year.”
As long as Favreau enjoys making “The Mandalorian,” he will continue. As Favreau admitted, “I don’t know what would make me not enjoy doing it, especially as long as the audience is connecting with these characters. This feels like a really enjoyable moment. And I love this format of telling one chapter at a time and keeping the audience guessing, but also fulfilling certain expectations.”
“The Mandalorian” is available to stream on Disney+. New episodes premiere every Wednesday.
“Ahsoka” and “Skeleton Crew” are expected to hit the platform sometime next year, followed by season 2 of “Andor” and “The Acolyte.”
