“I actually dropped the phone!” - Irish actress reveals mad moment she got surprise call to star in major Marvel movie

The actress was hired for the gig the same week she was considering giving up acting altogether.

For many actors these days, especially up-and-coming actors, the goal is likely to get a Marvel movie on to their CV. Usually, once Disney notice you and hire you, they tend to use you A LOT within their different universes. Just like an Awkwafina, who voiced a character in Raya & The Last Dragon, appeared again in Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings, and will next feature in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

We're guessing that is the same course of action that Irish actress Clare Dunne will get for herself off the back of her appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

We caught up with the Irish actress in the run-up to the release of her powerful new Irish drama Herself, and you can check out our full chat right here:

During the interview, we had to mention the fact that Dunne was actually a member of Mysterio's (Jake Gyllenhaal) evil crew in the Spider sequel, and we wanted to know (A) what is it like applying for and getting a Marvel gig, and (B) how long did she need to keep it a secret?

Dunne told us the following:

"It was amazing, it was such a rush. Because literally, that job fell out of the sky on me. I was in this really funny moment where we were supposed to shoot Herself and we couldn't align all of the stars and get Harriet [Walter] available. So we thought we were shooting about five or six months before we actually shot it.

"And, of course, I thought it was going ahead, so I turned down a couple of theatre jobs, and then I ended up absolutely broke. I was like 'I can't believe this, I have to move back home', I was absolutely gutted. 'I think I'm gonna have to move back home, I think I'm gonna have to move out of my flat, I just don't know where the money is coming from'.

"And I was literally having one of those weeks where I was like 'Why am I an actor?', and my agent rings me and says 'Clare, you're in Dublin right now, yeah? Okay, this is a bit mad, but you've been offered a role in a Marvel movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, and they need you in London but Sunday night.'

"I dropped the phone. Actually dropped the phone. So Marvel are incredible. If they like actors, and they just haven't given them a job yet, they keep their tapes, and they keep them in mind for future things. So during the Spider-Man movie, they were just creating, and they were on the go and writing during filming.

"So they created this team around Jake Gyllenhaal, and they were like 'We just need really good actors, but we need them next week.' So me and these three other actors from the UK all got hired and drove in or flown in or whatever it was, and it was so last minute.

"But the writers and directors are amazing. You walk on set and they're all over you. 'Howaya Clare, what's the craic? C'mere and I'll tell you what this is all about. C'mon, look at the monitor, and here is Jake and Tom [Holland].' They're so earthy, they're so funny, they're all about having the craic, and just getting the best out of the scenes.

"It was just such a lovely experience, I can't explain it. The food was amazing! The accommodation! They obviously had money to burn! Basically, it was just incredible. Tom is an absolute gent. Jake is lovely. And that whole experience is so mad, because it was at a moment when I was thinking 'Geez, what am I gonna do?'

"It was one of those stories that I've heard other actors have, and I was like 'Oh my god! It happened to me!' And then I had to not say anything to anyone. I wasn't allowed to tell anyone, but I just had the best time. I had about eight days on set, even though blink-and-you'll-miss-me in the film. We made loads of material, because they just need the material to work from, and then they decide in the end, in the edits.

"But I had a great time, it was absolutely fabulous."
