Madonna Biopic Gets SCRAPPED As The Singer Prepares For Her World Tour

Madonna Biopic Gets SCRAPPED As The Singer Prepares For Her World Tour

Queen of pop, Madonna‘s biopic starring Julia Garner has officially been scrapped despite the singer’s years of development on it. The biopic was in development at Universal Pictures after being announced in 2020, and she’d already worked on multiple scripts. However, the film’s termination comes shortly after Madonna announced a “career-spanning” world tour.

The tour begins on July 15th and will highlight Madonna’s impressive music catalog over her 40 years in the industry. It already sold out dates in London, New York, and Paris in minutes, and the performances are highly anticipated. Actress Julia Garner won the role of Madonna herself for the biopic after beating out several other talented actresses.

Garner would have possibly acted alongside Julia Fox, who was in talks for the role of Madonna’s friend, Debi Mazar. Madonna herself was also attached to the film as a director, co-screenwriter, and producer. In October last year, the singer revealed that she’d almost finished the biopic’s script, crediting her kids’ support.

Madonna’s highly anticipated biopic has been officially scrapped after months of development at Universal Pictures. Variety confirmed the biopic’s termination from multiple sources at the studio. While Madonna is yet to comment on the development, the announcement comes not long after she announced a world tour.

The biopic, which featured Julia Garner as Madonna herself, has been years in the making but was only announced in 2020. Madonna previously revealed that she’s worked on two draft scripts covering large periods of her professional and personal life. The biopic was to be produced by Amy Pascal and Guy Oseary.

Rumors about the biopic’s termination began immediately after Madonna recently announced her “career-spanning” world tour. She posted a viral video inspired by her 1990 film “Truth or Dare,” which featured stars like Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Judd Apatow, and many others. They all dare Madonna to go on tour performing her multiple hits over her four decades in the music industry.

The tour begins on July 15th and has already sold out several dates in London, New York, and Paris, all in minutes. The announcement also states that the tour will “pay respect to the city of New York, where her music career began.” Sources close to Madonna confirmed to Variety that she’s focused solely on her upcoming tour for now and will return to the biopic project one day.

In June 2022, Variety announced that Garner had been offered the lead role of Madonna in the biopic. The Golden Globe winner had won the role after beating out multiple other young and talented actresses in a singing and dancing boot camp. The actresses included Alexa Demie, Florence Pugh, Bebe Rexha, and Odessa Young.

A source with information on the biopic told People magazine at the time, “The Madonna project is in active development, and Julia Garner is the choice to play Madonna in the biopic.” The actress would have worked alongside “Uncut Gems” star Julia Fox, who was still in talks for the role of Madonna’s close friend, Debi Mazar.

The biopic would have been the crown jewel of Madonna’s film projects, which includes twenty-seven feature films, three plays, and multiple short films and commercials. As a director, the iconic singer has two feature films in her portfolio, including the 2008 dramedy “Filth and Wisdom,” and the 2011 historical romance “W.E.”

Madonna was also working on the biopic project as a producer, director, and co-screenwriter. In October last year, the singer announced in an Instagram post that she had almost finished writing the biopic’s script. This came shortly after the premiere of her Paramount+ documentary “Madame X.”

In the post shared by the Queen of Pop, Madonna herself could be seen working on the screenplay on her laptop. She captioned it per People, “Grateful for the success of Madame X, that my script is almost finished, and for the support of my beautiful children!”
