Amazon Prime Video India Plots 40-Strong TV And Film Originals Mega-Slate; Unveils TVoD Movie Rental Service

Amazon is strengthening its ties in India by unveiling a 40-strong slate of original TV series and films and an on-demand rentals service.

Having already made significant in-roads in the multi-lingual country, Amazon used an event at the JW Marriott Sahar in Mumbai to reveal plans for 22 scripted series, four unscripted series, nine returning series and four films, specials and co-productions, plus multi-year licensing agreements with major Indian producers, such as Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films.

Along with thrillers, action dramas and light-hearted comedies and romance stories, Amazon India is also pushing into the supernatural and horror genres for the first time.

The originals span Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and will roll out over the next two years, as part of recently-announced plans to double investment in Amazon Prime Video India over the next five years. Almost 70% feature new talent. Scroll down to see the full list below.

“This is about making sure we’re thinking about customers, who are incredibly diverse across India,” said Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke in an interview at the event. “How do we readch the talent that speaks to that diverse audience?”

The dramas include three locals version of anthology series Modern Love: the Tamil-language Modern Love Chennai, Modern Love Hyderabad for Telugu speakers and Modern Love Mumbai for Hindi-language subscribers.

Also on the Hindu slate are Emmay Entertainment’s supernatural thriller Adhura, a cop drama from Dil Chahta Hai producer Excel Media and Entertainment called Bambai Meri Jaan and a female-focused series from Breathe producer Abundantia Entertainment titled Hush Hush, while Telugu-language shows include horror Dhootha from Northstar Entertainment.

Unscripted shows include all-access documentary This is AP Dhillon, about the breakout Punjabi hip-hop star from Erik Barmack’s Wild Sheep Content and Brown Munde Inc.; cult filmmakers series Cinema… Marte Dum Tak from Vice Media; and true crime doc Dancing on the Grave.

Movies include Stone Beach’s Ammu, about a woman who does the unthinkable to get her abusive husband suspended from the police force; and Aye Watan… Mere Watan, a Dharmatic Entertainment film based on a true story of a young girl who became vital to the Indian independence fight.

Gaurav Gandhi, Country Manager for Amazon Prime Video India claimed the service’s focus on original content in multiple local languages has super-served local people over the past five years.

“With increased access and distribution, we have helped these great stories travel far and wide in India, and around the world,” he said. “We have played a key role in helping expand the linguistic palette of Indian customers, thereby, increasing the audience base for creators and talent.”

New Streaming Service

Amazon also used the event to unveil a transactional VoD (TVoD) service, Amazon Prime Video Store. This will customers early access to Indian and international features as rentals.

Billed as offering a “rich catalogue” of popular films, the service will be accessed through the ‘Store’ tab on amazon video.com and the Prime Video app.

“In tune with our vision to become the most-loved entertainment hub, we have steadily innovated in the way we offer movies to our consumers, from offering films in a post-theatrical early-window to direct-to-service premieres bringing the most anticipated movies to consumers’ living rooms and preferred devices,” said Gandhi. “We are deeply committed to grow this segment further and are going bigger on our film licensing partnerships, expanding our co-production initiatives and are now excited to announce our foray into original movies.”
