Ethan Hawke Talks About Nude Scene With Willem Dafoe In ‘The Northman’

Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe are two of the most well-known actors in Hollywood. Their career spans several decades and includes various awards that attest to their diverse abilities. Although Dafoe is two decades Hawke’s senior, the two actors have already worked together on set and will do so again in the forthcoming Viking picture “The Northman.”

As the premiere date approaches, Hawke took some time to talk about an incredible scene in the film in which he goes nude with his co-star Willem Dafoe.

In “The Northman,” Hawke portrays a Nordic monarch, King Aurvandill, who is assassinated and avenged by his son. As per Insider, while chatting with GQ, the actor revealed that the film allowed him to work alongside his hero, Dafoe, and gushed about a very intimate scene they shared during the film’s production.

“We have one amazing scene,” the 51-year-old Hollywood star recalled. “We get naked and do some kind of Viking acid and howl at the moon together. And oh my god, if you have to be naked and howl at the moon, he’s a great person to do it with.”

“Robert Eggers directed “The Northman,” and it will be Hawke and Dafoe’s second time working together on set. Both actors previously appeared on the same screen in the 2009 sci-fi horror film “The Daybreakers,” where they played vampires Edward Dalton and Lionel “Elvis” Cormac.

In another interview with the New Yorker, Hawke discussed his feelings about starring in “The Northman.” The

“Training Day” actor claimed that it felt like he returned to the old-school, big-budget origins of Hollywood studio pictures.

While Hawke confessed that he might have sneered at Eggers’ tactics in his early days, he now admires the care involved in creating a historically accurate setting, comparing the upcoming film to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 war epic “Apocalypse Now.”

“I’ve spent my life wondering, ‘Will I ever get to be on a set that feels like “Apocalypse Now”?’ You know, like, somebody’s trying,” Hawke said. “They have the balls and the hubris and the arrogance to say, ‘I want to make a masterpiece.”

Hawke added, “So, for me, just seeing somebody take a swing like that, you know, it’s like a jump off a high dive.”

Filming for “The Northman” started in August 2020 at Torr Head, County Antrim, and Ballygally, near Larne, Northern Ireland.

The crew then continued filming at Malin, on the picturesque Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, and wrapped up the production in early December 2020.
The film was produced for $90 million, which was more than its intended budget of $65 million. However, the showrunners hope to recoup the excess budget when the movie premieres.

“My daughter Maya said something really wise about it,” he said. “[She said] ‘We love the movies. And I want people to go to the movies. And I love it when audiences love movies, and if this is what they love, then we have to do a good job.'”
