The “Game of Thrones” prequel is getting a release date.
We just don’t know quite when it is yet.
HBO is planning for the prequel series “House of the Dragon” to come out in 2022, but they still don’t have an official release date for the series. HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys sat down with Deadline to talk about why the streaming service still has yet to announce a premiere date for the new series.
HBO Chief Content Officer Says HBO Held Off On Announcing Prequel Premiere Date Due To COVID-19
MEGAIt’s no secret that the entertainment industry has been marred by production delays ever since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in March 2020 and “House of the Dragon” is no exception.
“One of the reasons why we’re trying to be cautious about it is when you’re shooting a show that big during a pandemic, especially with the last round [with] a lot of crew and cast members… you didn’t know who was going to drop out or if we’re going to have to shut down so we just didn’t want to declare a date and then find ourselves shut down,” he explained.
“Now that we are out of production, I think that we will talk to their guys and figure out what we want to do in terms of announcing a date,” he added. “But I was just trying to make sure that we didn’t come out with a date that we couldn’t meet for something that was out of our control.”
MEGAHowever, the prequel series has now finished production and fans should expect to hear some good news concerning a release date in the near future. The prequel series is a team effort from author George R.R. Martin, Ryan Condal, and Miguel Sapochnik.
The series features an ensemble cast of “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Fabien Frankel, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno.
‘House Of The Dragon’ Won’t Be The Only ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff At HBO
MEGABloys also revealed that there are several more spin-off series in the works. Westeros is a big world with a long timeline and there is a multitude of stories to tell.
Last March, Deadline revealed that the network was developing several new shows, including “9 Voyages” aka “Sea Snake,” “Flea Bottom”, and “10,000 Ships.” Bloys said that there was “nothing really to report there” but admitted that they are “looking really good.”
“It’s just like any development process. Some are looking really good. Some we’ll see. We’re not going to make everything. I don’t have any mandate that I must make a certain amount of spin-offs or prequels or anything like that,” he explained.
“We’re really doing it just based on what we’re excited about creatively. I wouldn’t even give you a tease… [that] we might see something this year because I really don’t know, it depends on how the development comes in,” he added.
MEGABloys had previously revealed that they were working with author George R.R. Martin to help develop the “expansive history” of Westeros.
“We are talking about other areas that make sense as well. George R.R. Martin’s world is so big and what’s interesting about it, not only is it big but he’s got a lot of road maps in terms of history,” Bloys said at the time. “So, one of the great things about House of the Dragon is that’s an established history that leads you to Game of Thrones the show, and there is a lot of little branches. There is a lot of opportunities and stories to tell.”
“The good news with the prequels is that there is history that George has laid out,” he added. “We are working with George, it would really be something we talk about with him but for right now, the prequels land themselves to it because of the really expansive history that George laid out in his world.”
There Are Also Potential ‘Game Of Thrones’ Animated Projects Coming To HBO
MEGABloys admitted that the animated “Game of Thrones” project that had previously been announced was in “speculative development,” so it may not happen after all.
“Again, I think a lot of those were announced as speculative development… very embryonic development. I don’t even know to tell you the truth that we have a writer attached or anything like that,” he said. “The nice thing is because we control the property you can kind of try different things and see what’s exciting without having to commit… so we’ll let the creative lead us.”
Fans are anxiously awaiting the release date for “House of the Dragon,” which is speculated to debut sometime in 2022. In the meantime, fans can get a look at the official teaser below.
