As I’ve noted before, during Donald Trump’s presidency, a panic began to set in among Democrats who understood that without a virtual lock on the “minority” vote, their chances of winning elections would become increasingly difficult to near-impossible in some cases, especially in battleground parts of the country.
Trump made significant advances with Hispanic voters in his tenure. The result of the 2020 election saw an evident shift in where Hispanics, who usually vote left, voted for Trump and Republicans. This shift was also evident in the Gavin Newsom recall campaign, which was also shown in the final results.
The hits keep coming for Democrats on this front. A new Wall Street Journal Poll confirms that Hispanics are leaving the ship. It shows that support between Republicans and Dems among Hispanics is evenly divided, with Hispanic men being the driving force.
The Journal poll found that Hispanic voters have a split on their choices for Congress one year after voting in Democratic House candidates with more than 60% of the vote. When asked which party they’d support if it were an election today, 37% responded that they would vote for the Republican candidate, while 37% supported the Democrat. 22% of respondents were undecided.
Hispanic voters also were equally divided in their opinions about hypothetical presidential rematches 2024. 44% said they would support President Biden, while 43% supported former President Donald Trump. According to AP VoteCast (a vast survey of the American presidential electorate), Mr. Biden received 63% support from Hispanic voters in 2020. This is nearly 30 percentage points more than Trump.

As close as elections get in some states and Congressional districts, Democrats can’t afford to lose a single Hispanic or Independent voter, and yet the slow but steady erosion has begun, starting during the Trump era and continuing on ever since. Florida is one example of a state where the decline in Hispanic support has been so severe that political observers believe the state may be losing its Democratic majority. This could also be due to the declining support from Hispanics.
This does not mean that Republicans shouldn’t be aggressive in trying to reach the Hispanic population by changing the message of conservatism, but reframing it. What it does suggest, however, is the more “woke,” “pro-abortion,” anti-parent and anti-worker Democrats get the more support they’re going to lose from Hispanics.
I’ve long asserted that Hispanic voters (as well as black voters) in reality have more in common with Republicans than they do Democrats. It’s just that Republicans have been lousy messengers at times with getting the word out in a way that connects with voters in different minority groups. The Trump administration made it easier. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Democrats keep lurching further left, which they’re now finding out the hard way is not appreciated by one of their core voting blocs.
Go woke, go broke – and lose support and then elections, as it turns out.
