Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s relationship timeline

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are currently embroiled in an intense legal fight, but their romance wasn’t always so tumultuous.

From meeting in Hollywood to getting married, divorced and later battling it out in court, Page Six is breaking down the full timeline of their relationship.

The couple met in 2009 while shooting the Bruce Robinson-directed film “The Rum Diary.” Depp played a journalist named Paul Kemp who takes a job in Puerto Rico and falls head-over-heels in love with Chenault (Heard).

While the two didn’t become official until years later, Depp recently testified in his defamation suit against Heard that he felt “something I should not be feeling” on set.

Referring to a scene they shot in which their characters kiss in the shower, Depp recalled, “I think there was something in the kiss in the shower that was real.”

Heard agreed, testifying “I felt chemistry. I felt this other thing that went beyond my job, for sure. Johnny clearly felt that way about me.”

At the time, both Depp and Heard were seeing other people.

Depp and Heard split from their partners, Vanessa Paradis and Tasya van Ree respectively, in 2012.

This allowed the pair to reignite the passion felt on-set three years prior, with Depp believing Heard was “too good to be true.”

“She was attentive, she was loving, she was smart, she was kind, she was funny, she was understanding … we had many things in common, certain blues music, music, literature, for that year, year and a half, it was amazing,” he said of the early days of their relationship while testifying in court last month.

“She seemed to be the perfect partner in a sense, in my head.”

After two years of dating, the couple got engaged in 2014 and said “I do” on Depp’s private island in 2015.

However, their marriage may have been doomed from the start, with Depp allegedly joking, “Now I can punch her” to his best man as they walked from the ceremony to the reception on his wedding day.

According to both parties, the relationship was “at times volatile,” including one infamous night in 2016 where Heard allegedly hit the actor with a “haymaker” punch the same night she allegedly pooped in his bed.

Heard also accused the “Sweeney Todd” actor of abuse on multiple occasions, including accusations of hitting her with a bottle, forcing her to give him oral sex and subjecting her to “cavity searches” during their marriage.

After only 15 months of marriage, Heard filed for divorce and it was finalized in 2016. Depp agreed to pay Heard “in the region of $8 million” to settle.

“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love,” the pair said in a joint statement at the time.

“Neither party has lied nor made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”

In 2018, the “Aquaman” actress penned an op-ed for The Washington Post about women who’ve suffered from domestic abuse.

While she didn’t mention Depp by name in the article, many speculated that she was referring to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star.

Ongoing lawsuits

In 2019, Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex over the claims she made in the Washington Post op-ed. He alleges that the piece seriously damaged his career and cost him in excess of $40 million in earnings.

After her attempts to dismiss the suit were denied, she filed her own $100 million countersuit in 2020, calling Depp’s lawsuit “frivolous.”

Heard becomes a mom

Amid their ongoing legal troubles, Heard announced on social media in July 2021 that she secretly welcomed a baby girl, Oonagh Paige, via surrogate. She insisted at the time that she is both “the mom and dad” to the child.

“I’m so excited to share this news with you. Four years ago, I decided I wanted to have a child. I wanted to do it on my own terms,” she explained. “I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way.”

She added, “I hope we arrive at a point in which it’s normalized to not want a ring in order to have a crib.”

Depp’s $50 million lawsuit against Heard was finally brought before a judge last month and is currently ongoing. The televised court case has found Depp exploring everything from childhood abuse to drug addiction and his volatile relationship with Heard.

Meanwhile, Heard has stuck to her guns regarding the abuse she allegedly suffered from by Depp, accusing her former husband of threatening to kill her while the two were in the Bahamas in July 2013.

“He slams me up by my neck and holds me there for a second and tells me that he could f—ing kill me and that I was an embarrassment,” she testified.
