31% of U.S. tech workers put in less than 40 hours per week

While expensive cars or holidays to Europe might have been seen in the past as the ultimate barometers of career success, today work-life balance and an employer that facilitates well-being, both during and outside of working hours, is the ultimate goal.

And although tech has been getting a bad rap of late thanks to mass layoffs and fears about AI making human skills redundant, the industry as a whole stacks up against the likes of finance, banking, aviation and defense.

That’s according to arecent report released by job site Indeed which found that just over a third of tech workers clock in less than 40 hours per week (31% work 30-39 hours per week) and 5% work less than 30 hours per week.

Unsurprisingly, it’s the younger generations of tech workers that are taking full advantage of more flexibility in the workplace. Of the 31% who work between 31 and 39 hours, most have under 10 years experience and less than two years’ tenure in their current role, putting participants into the millennial and Gen Z camps.

Comparatively, 57% of those working in banking and finance work 40-49 hours per week.

Only 7% of those who participated in the study work more than 50 hours per week but this cohort also admitted to being active job seekers.

This correlates with Indeed’s research around what is prompting workers to leave their current roles: 39% of active job seekers are looking for more work-life balance, 38% want a job that is less stressful and 38% want better benefits such as additional PTO or parental leave.

The good news is that despite layoffs and fears around economic instability, tech companies are hiring with gusto and are looking for new ways to tap into talent.

In response, Indeed has launched a specialist Tech Network to help connect job seekers with the companies they want to work for. Crucially, it allows employers to reach top talent who might not be actively considering a move –but are open to offers that might facilitate the employee benefits outlined above.

Whatever camp you fall into, if you’re currently weighing up your options and a new job is looking like the most likely solution to your work-life balance woes, the VentureBeat Job Board is the perfect place to focus your search.

It features thousands of openings across tech in companies that are actively hiring, such as the three below.
