Academy Awards In Hot Water After Andrea Riseborough Gets Nom Over Viola Davis

Andrea Riseborough is the breakout star of the Academy Award nominations, but it’s suspect she was even nominated to begin with and the academy is launching its own investigation into it.

Andrea Riseborough Received A Nomination

The actress wasn’t even a part of the Academy Awards conversation, so it was shocking to see her name come up in the Best Actress category. A grassroots campaign online from fellow actors pushed Riseborough into the category for the film To Leslie.

A review is now being conducted into awards rules for online campaigning and how much they can and cannot affect the nomination of actors. Riseborough had earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination but besides that, there hasn’t been any buzz around this film or her.

Her celebrity friends made sure she got the boost she needed ahead of actual contenders like Viola Davis for The Woman King and Danielle Deadwyler for Till. A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow, Edward Norton, and Kate Winslet campaigned immensely online for Andrea.

Academy Award Policies Are Being Reviewed

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a statement indicating that they will be looking into the practices that led up to Riseborough’s nomination to make sure that everything was up to par. The outrage online has put them in a bad position.

“It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process.” the statement continues.

“We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication.”

The Academy is ensuring followers of this trend that they will be staying on top of this incident and have full confidence in their team to get to the bottom of this. “We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures, and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances.”

The nominations were announced earlier this week and fans noticed that there had been a few snubs to address. Social media was in an uproar about why Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler had been left off the Best Actress list.

Both women are nominated in all the big awards shows prior to the Oscars (unlike Andrea). The BAFTA’s, the Spirit Awards, the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and the Critic Choice Awards. When the noms were announced Riseborough was shocked.

“I’m astounded,” she quips, knowing her nomination wasn’t possible without the push of her famous friends.

“It’s such an unexpected ray of light. It was so hard to believe it might ever happen because we really hadn’t been in the running for anything else. Even though we had a lot of support, the idea it might actually happen seemed so far away.”

‘To Leslie’ Is Out Of Its League

Many people online accused the film and even its plot line of being out of its league. In To Leslie, Riseborough plays a woman who won the lottery and squandered it. She is now looking for redemption.

Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Sarah Paulson, and Courteney Cox hosted private screenings of the film after Riseborough complained that it was readily available after the minor or “lull” buzz as Riseborough describes it after debuting at SXSW.

The private screenings made it look as though people were missing out on something more epic than two true stories that were already on the path to nominations.
