Man arrested after shop owner assaulted with glass bottle during attempted robbery in Limerick

The arrested man is due to appear in court this evening.


A man has been arrested after a shop owner was assaulted with a glass bottle during an attempted robbery in Limerick.

Gardaí in Roxboro Road were alerted to the incident that occurred at a business premises on St. Nessan's Road at around 5pm on Friday evening.

A lone male in his 20s entered the premises and armed himself with a glass bottle from the shelf, a Garda spokesperson said in a statement.


He then attempted to take money from the till and hit the shop owner over the head with the bottle, injuring his face.


The man was arrested by Gardaí upon their arrival and the injured party received treatment by ambulance staff at the scene.


The arrested male was conveyed to Roxboro Road Garda station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and has since been charged in relation to the incident.


He is due to appear before a special sitting of Ennis District Court on Saturday evening at 6pm.


The investigation into the incident is ongoing, Gardaí have said.
