Prince Harry details his low-key proposal to Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle let royal fans in on how their magical proposal went down back in 2017.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex opened up about the early days of their relationship in their new Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan” — in which the former royals discuss life before, during and after the palace.

Among the myriad of revelations the scandal-scarred royals have detailed in the documentary, one particular anecdote was about the day Harry popped the all-important question to Markle, 41.

“I wanted to do it earlier,” Harry, 38, explained in the series’ second episode, released on Thursday. “I had to ask permission from my grandmother, I couldn’t do it outside the UK.”

Detailing the proposal — which the pair previously said took place inside their cottage — Harry recalled opening “a bottle of Champagne while she [Markle] was roasting a chicken — and that kind of slightly gave the game away.”

“She was like, ‘You never drink Champagne, what’s the occasion?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know, I just had it like, lying around,'” he quipped, before revealing that Markle’s beagle, Guy, was there after being flown in from the US.

“In the middle of the walled garden, overlooked by the staff flats, I got 15 of those electric candles,” Harry explained, before Markle chimed in, “He told me not to peek.”

Markle then called her friend, to whom she whispered, “It’s actually happening!”

The pair also shared some never-before-seen snaps from the special moment, which showed Harry down on one knee holding a ring box in one hand as the pooch sat next to him.

“He was down on one knee, and I was like ‘yes’ we were so joyful and excited,” Markle said. “We thought, ‘We’re doing this!'”

In the third episode of the documentary, Markle referred to her engagement interview on Nov. 27, 2017, as an “orchestrated reality show.”

“It was rehearsed,” Markle said of the photocall in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. “We did the thing out with the press, then we went right inside, took the coat off, and did the interview. So it’s all in that same moment.”
