‘Squid Game’: This Sex Scene Was Inspired By A Reality Show

Taking a glance at the eye-popping ratings “Squid Game” has achieved since its premiere, it is evident that the Netflix-owned series is a hit. The series enthralled fans with timely and universal themes that portrayed the reality of many.

The show was created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who masterly told the tale of players in a death game all vying for a life-changing amount of money that will help clear their enormous debt. The series used scenes that viewers could easily relate to and understand.

Considering this, many have asked if the sex scene in episode four between Jang Deok-Su (Heo Sung-Tae) and Han Mi-nyeo (Kim Joo-young) was critical to the storyline. Hwang recently disclosed that it served a purpose, and he got inspired to add the part after watching a reality show.

‘Squid Game’ Sex Scene

According to The Guardian, Hwang revealed what inspired him to create the risqué scene in the show. While watching a TV reality show about contestants trapped on a secluded island, the idea formed in his head, and he quickly penned it.

The scene showed Deok-Su and Mi-nyeo having a go at it in the toilet and climaxes when the female asked her counterpart, “swear to stick together right to the end?” Hwang explained that the scene relates to the psychology of humans when trapped in a dire situation.

“It was about people’s psychology in extreme situations. They are sexually attracted to people they believe are stronger and the best at hunting when they wouldn’t have been before,” said Hwang.

Some fans already understood that the scene was not necessarily for sexual gratification. To them, it was more of a power play and a form of transaction. Ultimately, the overall plot of the scene showed how far people are ready to go to safeguard their interests.

Mi-Nyeo And Deok-Su’s Relationship Is About Survival

Fans can recall Deok-su did not look like an underdog in any way. He had a very menacing face amplified by his fearsome facial tattoo. In addition, his intimidating build made him seem like the kind of alpha that would survive till the very end.

As the number of players in the deadly game was enormous, Mi-nyeo knew she had a slim chance of survival. Hence, aligning with Mi-Nyeo might give her an edge.

Still, in the interview with The Guardian, Hwang described the concept of their relationship. “The woman relies on the strongest man in the group. She has to find something to rely on.,” he said.

“She believes it’s love – otherwise, it’s too sad, you know, to sell sex to the guy just to survive.” Mi-nyeo’s plan for survival becomes a romance in her mind to push away the reality of what she is doing.”

How Did The Pair Die?

Despite the promise made in the episode four sex scene, Deok-su took no time in betraying Mi-nyeo severally. Their death came during the set of games played in episode seven. The game was called glass stepping stones.

Players were to step on the glasses to get to the other side. One of the glasses was normal– while the other tempered. As one may expect, the former will break if stepped on, but the latter can hold the weight.

Deok-su started the game with Mi-nyeo. Midway, he got scared to take the next leap of faith and wanted someone else to move ahead and continue the game so he could step on the right ones.
Mi-nyeo, who was behind him, accedes to his request. Instead of moving forward, she hugged him tightly and plummeted them to their death, revenging his wrongdoings.

Is There A ‘Squid Game’ Season Two?

Following the success of the hit show, Hwang had previously told Variety that he did not fancy creating a sequel stressing that he had not investigated the possibility.

Hwang told Variety: “I don’t have well-developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

However, according to Yahoo, he changed his mind and announced that he was collaborating with Netflix to release a second season of the electrifying series.

“So there’s been so much pressure. So much demand and so much love for a second season,” he said. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”
