Robert Pattinson Confirmed To Return For ‘The Batman’ Sequel

Actor Robert Pattinson will return as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

CinemaCon, the annual meeting of theater owners and Hollywood studios, runs from April 25 to 28. Warner Bros. and DC announced Tuesday night at the event that “The Batman” was officially getting a sequel, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

“The Batman,” which was released in March, was a huge box office success and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2022, with an international total of $759 million dollars.


Robert Pattinson will reprise his role and director Matt Reeves will return to direct.


Warner Bros. movie chief Toby Emmerich praised Reeves for taking “one of our most iconic and beloved superheroes” and delivering “a fresh” superhero film. He continued to say that “Matt Reeves, Rob Pattinson, and the entire team will be taking audiences back to Gotham with The Batman 2.”

Unfortunately for fans, no release date has yet to be announced for the sequel.


This is the first time that Pattinson has been cast as the DC hero. Other notable characters in the film included Riddler, played by Paul Dano, and Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, also known as Penguin, played by Colin Farrell. Zoë Kravitz played Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, and Andy Serkis played Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler.


‘The Batman’ Spin-Off Series Is Already In The Works At HBO Max

Less than a week after “The Batman” hit theaters, HBO Max already committed to a straight-to-limited series order for “The Penguin,” which sees Farrell reprising his role as the titular character. The series will be executive produced by Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, Colin Farrell, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, and Lauren LeFranc. LeFranc will also serve as the series showrunner.


At CinemaCon, “The Batman” director Matt Reeves thanked cinema owners for keeping the “flicker of hope” for moviegoers alive when the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown hit in March 2020. “Helping to play a role in your success is very important to me,” Reeves said.

“The success of The Batman was a true team effort. We could not have gotten to this place without … the theatrical experience,” he continued. “For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As a lifelong fan of the movies, I treasure what you do.”


Earlier in the day, Reeves had mentioned, “There’s a sanctuary to be found in the movies.”

“The Batman” is currently available to stream on HBO Max. The film is 2 hours and 56 minutes long, but has received positive reviews from critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it’s certified fresh at 86% and the audience score sits just above it at 87%.


The Critics Consensus reads: “A grim, gritty, and gripping super-noir, The Batman ranks among the Dark Knight’s bleakest — and most thrillingly ambitious — live-action outings.”


Victor Pineyro of Seventh Art Studio wrote, “Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson made it look easy to make a new great Batman movie. Greig Fraser, Colin Pharrell, and Paul Dano steal the show. The best Gotham out there in a universe full of potential.” Pineyro gave the film an 8 out of 10.

Katie Smith-Wong of Music Movies and Hoops wrote, “Thanks to Pattinson and Danos compelling performances, as well as Reeves’s ambitious direction, The Batman is an enthralling thriller and a welcome return for the Caped Crusader.”


Jared Mobarak wrote on his website that “Reeves takes inspiration from numerous comic storylines, mixing and matching to concoct an elaborate tapestry that overflows with iconic characters in differing stages of repute. While not as emotive as his Apes films, the blockbuster spectacle remain.” Mobarak also gave the film an 8 out of 10.

Kathryn Reklis of The Christian Century wrote, “I didn’t think I wanted another Batman movie. But it turns out that Matt Reeves’s The Batman — starring Robert Pattinson, who played Edward Cullen in the Twilight films — has the Batman we need.”
