Selena Gomez Claims Disconnecting From Social Media Saved Her Life

To a large extent, social media has its perks and downsides. To some people, it wouldn’t be easy to attain certain heights without it. To others, it’d be completely shut down if the power was in their hands.

Many celebrities have had their share of the good and bad on social media. Although most of them thrive on it, being in the spotlight exposes them to the harsh tongues of “keyboard warriors,” who have no care to filter their thoughts or opinions.

And being famous doesn’t come with an automatic immunity to these things, as they are humans with feelings.

Former Disney star girl, Selena Gomez, wasn’t spared from the social media drama. To shield herself from the chaos, she decided to take a break from it. Although she managed to stay connected with her fans, she explained the reason for her actions.

It Was Ruining Her Mental Health

After realizing how unhealthy social media was getting, she decided to take two steps back and breathe. In an interview with WWD’s Beauty Inc, she revealed she felt very uncomfortable with the magnitude of information she saw out there.

“This is too much of my personal life spread out there.” She expressed how she felt totally out of control of her life and what was exposed about it.

She also stated how the pressure of being in front of millions of people felt. She disliked that she began to let the opinions of others define her thoughts.

So one day, she snapped and thought to herself,” ‘Why would I? I get nothing out of it.” She was serious, as many people began to notice her disconnection from the media. If not for her wise team, she almost deleted all her social media accounts.

Gomez Stays Active With The Help Of An Assistant

With over 250 million followers, Gomez is one of the most followed celebrities on Instagram. No doubt it’s difficult to stay away completely.

Besides, she needed to remain intact with her loyal fans, popularly called the “Selenators.” After the singer/songwriter reached her limit with social media’s overwhelming nature and took a break, she decided to stay active through an assistant. She maintained enough contact with her fans through this assistant.

Gomez said, “I text my аssistаnt the cаption thаt I wаnt for аll of my posts.” She managed to stay active and keep her fans informed, which helped her stay true to herself.

Gomez added the separation improved her mental health drastically. She shielded herself from the frenzy of mainstream culture. In her words, “Thаt mаy not mаke everyone hаppy, it hаs truly sаved my life.”

Gomez Admitted She Felt Pressure Growing In The Spotlight

Being a child star is no easy job. Gomez has been in the spotlight since she landed the role of Alex in the popular Disney show “Wizards Of Waverly Place.” She spoke about the pressure she felt to be a good role model when she was much younger.

“Growing up, I felt this great amount of pressure to be a decent role model,” the actor revealed. She added that although she realized it wasn’t realistic, her life became public rapidly. I had no idea that I was going through my own mental health journey at the moment.” she said.

Even as a teenager, she was exposed to the narrative people created about her life. She described it as “confusing.”

Gomez realized she needed to change and tell the rest of the world the truth about her decision. She wanted to take control of her narrative when she was going through a difficult time. This led to her taking a social media break.

What Has Gomez Been Up To?

Her mental health became better after her long break. With over 250 million followers on Instagram, 65 million on Twitter, 36 million Tik-Tok, and 29 million subscribers on YouTube, she has channeled her influence to things she loves to do.

She used her influence to push attention towards mental health matters. Gomez opened up about how she once battled with anxiety and depression. She also shared she was diagnosed with bipolar issues, lived with lupus, and had a kidney transplant.

She launched a beauty brand called “Rare Beauty.” As a mental health champion, she channeled 1% of sales from her Rare Beauty line to the “Rare Impact Fund.”

She sought to raise at least $100 million to expand mental health care for neglected regions over the next ten years.

It is rumored that “Only Murders in the Building,” a Hulu original murder mystery/comedy series, would star her in it. From the look of things, it can only get better for the “Wolves” star.
