Saido Berahino is a Burundian professional football player who plays for League One club Sheffield Wednesday and captains the Burundi national team as a striker. He started playing football for the youth team of West Bromwich Albion at the age of 11 in 2004 and began his career at the club. He then played for Northampton Town (loan), Brentford (loan), Peterborough United (loan), Stoke City, Zulte Waregem, and Charleroi (loan). Currently, he is playing for League One club Sheffield Wednesday.


On the international level, he holds both British and Burundian nationality. He has represented England at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20, and U21, and also represented Burundi at the senior level. He was part of the England U17 team which won the 2010 European Championship. He was called up for the first time to the England senior team in November 2014 but did not play. He switched his international allegiance to Burundi in August 2018. He made his international team debut for Burundi on 8 September 2018 at the group stage of the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualification. He was named in the provisional 28-man squad for the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt. He captained the team and played all three games - two starts - as they were eliminated from Group B without a goal or point.

Saido Berahino was born on 4 August 1993. His birthplace is Bujumbura, Burundi. He was born to his mother, Liliane Berahino, and his father whose name is unknown. His father was killed in 1997 during the Burundian Civil War. At the age of 10, he traveled to England fleeing the ongoing war to join his mother, brother, and sisters who had already been granted asylum in Newtown, Birmingham. He could not locate his family on arrival and was put in a care home. After his mother Liliane was traced, immigration officials had to administer a DNA test to confirm their relationship. He attended Aston Manor School where he gained ten GCSE certificates and competed in basketball and athletics in addition to football. He holds both British and Burundian nationality.   • He started playing football for the youth team of West Bromwich Albion at the age of 11 in 2004 and began his career at the club. 

  • He signed for the West Bromwich Albion Centre of Excellence in 2004 at the U12 level, joining from inner-city youth club Phoenix United. He signed his first professional contract with the club in the summer of 2011.

  • On 20 October 2011, he joined League Two club Northampton Town on a one-month loan deal. He made his professional debut for the club on 22 October 2011 in a 2-1 loss against Bradford. On 25 October 2011, he scored his first senior goal for the club in a 3-1 home loss against Hereford United. His loan was extended twice, on 3 November and on 5 January 2012. During his loan spell at Northampton Town, he made 15 appearances for the club, scoring 6 goals and providing 1 assist in all the competitions. 

  • On 9 February 2012, he went out on loan again, this time at a higher level than before, by joining League One club Brentford through to the end of the season. He made his debut for the club on 14 February 2012 in a 2-1 loss against Colchester United. On 20 February 2012, he scored his first goal for the club, scoring twice in a 4-0 win against Carlisle United. During his loan spell at Brentford, he made 8 appearances for the club, scoring 4 goals in all the competitions. 

  • He then returned to West Bromwich Albion and made his debut for the club on 28 August 2012 in a 4-2 win against Yeovil Town in a League Cup second-round tie. 

  • On 1 October 2012, he joined on loan for Championship club Peterborough United in a deal until 2 January 2013. He made his debut for the club on 2 October 2012 in a 2-0 win against Barnsley FC. On 27 October 2012, he scored his first goal for the club, scoring twice in a 3-0 win against Derby. During his loan spell at Peterborough United, he played ten matches which were cut short by a knee injury.

  • On 28 August 2012, he made his first start for West Bromwich Albion, scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 home win against Newport County in a League Cup tie. During his 2012-13 season, he made only 1 appearance for the club in all the competitions. 

  • On 1 September 2013, he made his first league appearance for the club in a 2-0 home defeat against Swansea City. On 28 September 2013, he replaced the injured Sinclair in the first half and scored his first Premier League goal, the winner in a 2-1 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. On 2 December 2013, he extended his contract with the club until June 2017. During his 2013-14 season, he made 35 appearances for the club, scoring 9 goals and providing 2 assists in all the competitions.

  • On 3 January 2015, he scored four goals for the club in a 7-0 win against Gateshead in the FA Cup third round. On 14 February 2015, he scored the team's final goal in a 4-0 defeat of West Ham United to put West Bromwich Albion into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2008. On 18 May 2015, he scored twice in a 3-0 win over recently crowned league champions Chelsea. During his 2014-15 season, he made 45 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals and providing 6 assists in all the competitions. Following his arrest for drink-driving in February 2019, he was not selected by Nathan Jones again in the 2018-19 season and was suspended without pay during legal proceedings, whilst the club sought legal advice regarding the contract of the striker. He was later informed his contract would be terminated. During that season, he made 26 appearances for the club, scoring 5 goals and providing 1 assist in all the competitions as Stoke City confirmed his exit on 7 August 2019 by "mutual agreement".

  • On 9 August 2019, he signed a two-year deal with Zulte Waregem with the option of a third. He scored his debut for the club on 10 August 2019 in a 2-0 win over K.R.C. Genk in the Belgian First Division A. In his first season, he made 22 appearances for the club, scoring 8 goals and providing 3 assists in all the competitions.

  • On 5 October 2020, he was loaned to R. Charleroi S.C. of the same league, with the option to buy. He scored his debut for the club on 18 October 2020 in a 2-1 loss against K.R.C. Genk.
