Taika Waititi Gives Fans An Update On His ‘Star Wars’ Movie

Taika Waititi Gives Fans An Update On His ‘Star Wars’ Movie

Director Taika Waititi finally gave fans an update on his long-awaited Star Wars movie.

For Star Wars Day in 2020, Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi would co-write a new Star Wars movie alongside “Last Night in Soho” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

However, not much about the project has been disclosed since that time. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy seemed to suggest that his movie would hit theaters before “Rogue Squadron,” which is being created by “Wonder Woman” creator Patty Jenkins.

However, Jenkins’ commitment to “Wonder Woman 3” is taking priority, so its original December 2023 release date is looking less and less likely. But, given what Taika Waititi recently had to say, it seems doubtful that fans will be able to see a Star Wars film in theaters in 2023.

Taika Waititi Has Not Finished The Script For His ‘Star Wars’ Movie Yet!

According to The Wrap, Waititi has bad news for fans hoping for his Star Wars movie to come out in 2023.

When asked if he’d begun working on the project, Taika Waititi replied, “Not this year.”

“I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits’ and during that time I will still be writing,” he explained.

He added, “I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”

Waititi was also asked by /Film if he would be able to bring his signature style to the franchise.

“No, I’m able to kind of bring my ton,” he said. “ At the moment it’s just very early, because I … still haven’t even finished the script. I’m still trying to come up with ideas and I’m mostly kind of in that part of the process where it’s still very kind of open. And when I write, I kind of write every idea I’ve ever had and then start to kind of chisel it down into something. But I’m still throwing everything at the wall right now.”

However, in an interview with Total Film, he hinted that he’s going to explore characters never before seen in a galaxy far, far away.

“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand,” Waititi said. “I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”

Although it seems like it’s going to be years until Star Wars fans can head to the theaters to watch a new movie, there is plenty of new content coming to Disney+ for fans to enjoy.

The Future Of Star Wars Might Lie With Disney+

Disney+

Earlier this month, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” wrapped up its six-episode limited series run. Although the show brought in more viewers than “The Book of Boba Fett,” the show wasn’t well-received by fans and it’s starting to look doubtful that Disney will give Obi-Wan a second season.

Fortunately, there are many more projects starring fan-favorite characters in the works. Last month, Dave Filoni teased that production on the “Ahsoka” series had started. Scheduled for release in 2023, Rosario Dawson will continue to reprise her live-action role of Ahsoka Tano for the series after first portraying her in “The Mandalorian.” She will be joined by Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who will give Sabine Wren her live-action debut as well.

But before “Ahsoka” gets her debut, Diego Luna will be reprising his role of Cassian Andor for the upcoming Disney+ series “Andor,” which will be coming out this August. Andor will reprise his role for his appearance in 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Although Andor ultimately gave his life for the Rebellion, the show will focus on how he joined the cause and give more insight into Mon Mothma’s character as well. The show will consist of two seasons of twelve episodes. The final season will lead directly into the events of “Rogue One.”

Many fans are also looking forward to season 3 of “The Mandalorian,” which is scheduled for release in February 2023. The titular Mandalorian, Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, was reunited with Grogu (also known as Baby Yoda or The Child) in the season finale of “The Book of Boba Fett.”

This season will focus on his return to his Mandalorian roots. At the annual Star Wars Celebration fan event, Katee Sackhoff confirmed that she will reprise her role as Bo-Katan Kryze and gave fans who attended the event a sneak peek of the season, which has yet to be released online.

So, although it seems that fans have a long wait to head to theaters to see another Star Wars movie, at least there is a lot of content coming to Disney+.
