Taylor Lautner thought Kanye West’s VMAs interruption was a ‘skit’

Taylor Lautner wishes he could go “Back To December” – or at least to September 2009.

When asked by his wife, Tay Dome, about which moment in his life he would return to if he could, the “Twilight” actor recalled an iconic moment in pop culture history.

“Probably the 2009 VMAs,” Lautner, 30, said on their podcast, “The Squeeze,” which was re-shared to TikTok on Wednesday.

“When I presented the award to Taylor and was unaware that the Kanye [West] thing was not a skit,” he continued, referencing the time West, 45, interrupted Swift, 33, as she was accepting her MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video for “You Belong with Me.”

“I presented the award to her, so I have the award. I took five steps back and was standing five feet behind her,” Lautner recalled. “And in the middle of her giving her ‘thank you’ speech, Kanye jumps up onto the stage.”

At the time, West took the microphone right out of Swift’s hand and told the crowd that Beyoncé “had one of the best videos of all time” – for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” – and should have won over the country star.

Although Lautner was standing on stage, he claimed he wasn’t able to hear much of the now-infamous interaction.

“I can barely hear it. I can’t see them,” he recalled during the podcast. “I’m just assuming this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit, because why else would Kanye West be jumping on the stage interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense.”

The actor even pretended to go along with what he thought was a “skit” by giggling on stage as West’s rant continued on.

“He jumped off. She finished [talking],” Lautner remembered. “The second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No. That wasn’t good.’”

Swift recalled the aftermath of the events that night — Sept. 13 2009 — in her song “Back to December,” which the former couple confirmed was about their brief romance.

“I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile/So good to me, so right/And how you held me in your arms that September night/The first time you ever saw me cry,” the Grammy winner crooned on the 2010 track.

More than a decade later, the pair have moved on with other partners. Lautner said “I do” to Dome at Epoch Estate Wines in Templeton, Calif., in November 2022.

Pics and video footage from their big day showed the pair holding hands and exchanging kisses while posing for photos with their bridal party.

The newlyweds first went public with their romance in 2018 and have been gushing over each other ever since.

“My sister Makena actually introduced us. She called me and said, ‘Dude, I found your future wife. You need to meet this girl.’ And the rest is history,” Lautner previously told People.

Meanwhile, the “Anti-Hero” singer has been dating actor Joe Alwyn since 2016. The “Conversations with Friends” star has become a pro at dodging questions surrounding the couple’s rumored engagement.

“If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins,” he told WSJ. Magazine last year.

“I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say.”
