Taylor Swift Fans Went Into A Frenzy Over Her Song In ‘You’ Season 3

The third season of the Netflix show “You” was released on October 15, 2021, and didn’t fall short of expectations as many fans commended the plot via social media outlets.

The thriller series focuses on the life of the serial killer couple, Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) and Love Quinn-Goldberg (played by Victoria Pedretti), in their suburban home.

Many fans also praised the new season’s soundtrack, especially the Grammy award-nominated song “Exile” from Taylor Swift‘s album Folklore, released in 2020. Word got out shortly after the release of season 3 that the song was featured in the series, and this got many of her fans talking on Reddit and other social media platforms.

This greatly boosted the popularity of the song. Keep reading below to find out how Swift’s fans reacted when “Exile” was chosen as a theme song in “You.”

How Swift’s Fans Responded To The Song Choice In ‘You’

For many fans of Swift and the series, the song choice came as a surprise as it was an unannounced and unexpected inclusion. They were, however, equally excited that the producers chose the song. Many supporters also expressed that they believed it to be the perfect song choice for the particularly important scene in the season’s finale.

A Reddit fan wrote, “Wow. Not to spoil anything but the placement of the song pulled at the heartstrings. I had no idea it would be featured. I gasped.”

“Well after watching it, I absolutely loved their use of Exile. has to be one of my favorite season finales in a long time,” another fan wrote.

“It fit so well to the whole scene, I’m glad that they chose Exile, the overall dark mood, lyrics, the music everything worked so well together! I had goosebumps,”

In response to the above post, another fan said, “Ahh I was just about to post about this because it’s playing right now!! Such a perfect fit!”

Why Was ‘Exile’ Picked?

Joe and Love’s unstable and toxic romance ended in a shocking twist. Before setting the house ablaze, Joe murdered his lover, faked his death, and arranged the crime scene to portray a murder-suicide.

Many viewers expressed that they believe “Exile” was the perfect pick for such a moment, an important reason being that the lyrics caught different aspects of the couple’s toxic romance, such as the fact that the duo always “walk a very thin line” and there were “so many signs” that the marriage was bound to fail.

The lyrics of the rest of the song summarized how the couple’s relationship fell apart.

When asked about the reasoning behind the song choice, the series showrunner, Sera Gamble, expressed that she thought the song was the “perfect sad song” for the part.

When Was ‘Exile’ Released?

“Exile” is the fourth song on Swift’s 8th studio album “Folklore,” released on July 24, 2020.

During an interview that the album’s producer, Aaron Dessner, had with Pitchfork, he spoke about the creation of “Exile” and the feature of Bon Iver on the song.

He said, “When Taylor sent it to me as a voice memo, she sang both the male and female parts- as much as she could fit in without losing her breath.” He then spoke about her reaction when he suggested Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and said, “She was like, ‘Oh my God, I would die if he would do it. It would be so perfect.’ I didn’t want to put pressure on Justin as his friend, so I said, ‘Well, it depends on if he’s inspired by the song”.

‘Exile’ Nominated In Grammys’ Best Pop Duo Category

“Folklore’s” several nominations at the 2021 Grammys inspired many tweets highlighting the album’s success.

“Folklore brought me unexplainable amounts of comfort during some of the hardest times of my life and I’ll never forget that album,” a fan expressed.

The album was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year. The song “Cardigan” also received nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, and “Exile” was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
