It seems “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is breaking even more records!

Although James Cameron‘s 2009 film “Avatar” once topped the chart, the latest “Spider-Man” film has now replaced it as the third-highest-grossing film at the domestic box office.

After it was released in 2009, “Avatar” brought in $760 million dollars at the domestic box office. According to Entertainment Weekly, the recent “Spider-Man” film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has now brought in $760.988 million dollars, just edging out “Avatar.”

However, it still lags behind two of its predecessors at the domestic box office: 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” and 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which is the first film of the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.

“Avengers: Endgame” took home an impressive $860 million dollars. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” actually topped the charts and became the top-grossing domestic film with over $935 million dollars.

It should be noted that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has grossed over $1.8 billion dollars worldwide, and is the first film to cross the $1 billion dollar mark during the pandemic.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Crushed Pandemic Box Office Expectations

As The Blast previously reported, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” exceeded expectations for a pandemic box office and took home $121.5 million on the day of its release.

That total made “Spider-Man: No Home Way” the highest post-pandemic opening film to date. The second-highest opening before it came from “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” in October 2020, which brought in only $90 million.

Not adjusting for inflation, Friday’s total became the second-biggest opening day of all time behind “Avengers: Endgame,” which celebrated an opening day total of $157.5 million.

That being said, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did have the biggest ever opening day release in the month of December, grossing more than any of the “Star Wars” films.

Earlier this month, “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland was presented with the numbers and his reaction was everything that fans would expect. “For real?” he asked. “Holy s—. That’s incredible. I didn’t know that. Honestly, that’s amazing.”

Actors Tobey MaguireAndrew Garfield, and Tom Holland all sat down with Deadline to talk about the film’s success.

During the interview, Holland said, “I mean, I always knew that this film would be loved around the world. I didn’t think it would be quite as massive as it had been.”

“I don’t think I could ever have imagined it as being so well received by everyone,” he continued. “I mean, I guess I had an idea that people would love this movie, but in no way, shape, or form could I have thought it was going to be as big as it has been.”

“And it’s been … only the last couple weeks that I have sort of really come back to reality and come home and started to face real-world problems, and it feels like we’ve been on some sort of really weird dream,” he added. “It feels really strange.”

When he was filming the last movie, Holland said that he was well aware that this could be the last time he was donning the iconic Spidey suit.

“There definitely was a sense for me, as an actor, that this was the last time that I could potentially don the suit, so a lot of that emotion came from the act of saying goodbye, which is one of the biggest themes throughout this film,” Holland explained. “But this film also felt like a celebration of three generations of cinema. So, at times, we would be getting into these scenes that were incredibly emotional.”

When asked if it was possible for him to return to the big screen as the web-slinging hero, Holland replied, “I don’t know the answer to that question.”

“I don’t know,” he continued. “I know I love this character, and I know that I am not ready to say goodbye.”

“But if it’s time for me to say goodbye, then I will do so proudly, knowing that I’ve achieved everything I wanted to with this character, and sharing it with these boys will be forever one of the most special experiences of my career,” he added. “So, if it’s time, it’s time. If it’s not, it’s not. But at the moment, I don’t know.”
