Two Gardaí assaulted during protest in Dublin City Centre

Two men have been arrested in relation to the incident.


During a protest on Kildare Street today (Thursday, 21 October), with crowds gathering outside government buildings in the area, two members of An Garda Síochána were assaulted.

In a statement to JOE, An Garda Síochána confirmed the following:

"Gardaí monitored the scene of a protest that occurred on Kildare Street, Dublin 2, on the afternoon of Thursday, 21 October, 2021.


"During the course of this protest, two men became verbally abusive and physically threatening to members of An Garda Síochána.


"As Gardaí sought to arrest these two males, two members of An Garda Síochána were assaulted, one struck in the face, one struck in the neck.  Gardaí utilised incapacitant spray and both males were arrested and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station. Both Gardaí received medical treatment for their injuries.


"The male in his 60s has since been charged and bailed to appear in District Court 3, CCJ on the 17 November 2021. The man in his 40s has been charged to appear in District Court 3, CCJ tomorrow morning Friday, 22 October 2021.


"Later in the afternoon, persons attending this protest moved to outside a private residence in the Dublin 8 area. This protest ended peacefully at approximately 6.30pm with no further incident."
