Although the song is currently making waves on the chart, this will not translate to a nomination or a later win, albeit well deserved.

In a recent interview with the Elvis Duran Show, Lin-Manuel Miranda, song composer for the Disney film, talked about the reason for this sad exclusion. He disclosed that the showrunners had no idea that “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” would make such a wave in the chart, and they had chosen a different song titled “Dos Oruguitas” for their Oscar submission.
‘Dos Oruguitas’ Is “The Foundational Story” Of Encanto
If given a chance to go back in time, Miranda and Disney would probably have chosen to submit “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” based on the current hype around the song.
However, when picking a song out of the featured tracks in “Encanto” for their Oscar submission, the showrunners had a reason that influenced their decision to forward “Dos Oruguitas.”
“When you submit a song for consideration, I always think the song you submit is not about whether you win or not,” Miranda explained. “It’s about the one that best exemplifies the spirit of the movie itself. That’s always the guiding principle, and for us, ‘Dos Oruguitas’ is the foundational story.”
Does ‘Dos Oruguitas’ Have A Chance Of Landing An Oscar win?
With “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” out of the running, it is up to “Dos Oruguitas” to bring home the Oscar win. The song played during a flashback scene that told the story of the Madrigal matriarch Abuela Alma (María Cecilia Botero), giving fans an insight into the family’s origins.
Currently, the chances of “Dos Oruguitas” landing the prestigious Best Original Song award are looking quite good. According to Gold Derby, “Dos Oruguitas” is ranked second on the prediction charts after Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die” from the eponymously named James Bond film.
Although the last two Bond blockbusters had songs that earned Oscar wins, “Dos Oruguitas” is much more than an underdog, following Disney’s history of dominating this category.
Disney’s ‘Encanto’ Soundtrack Has Six Hit Songs
Apart from “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Dos Oruguitas,” other songs from the ‘Encanto’ Soundtrack have gained much airtime, becoming a constant feature on the charts. “Surface Pressure” and “The Family Madrigal” have maintained their place in the top 20.
Hits like “What Else Can I Do?” “Waiting on a Miracle” and “Dos Oruguitas” garnered critical acclaim from the public for their enthralling sounds as well.
However, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” remains the best export from the song, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and making a new record as the second song from a Disney animated film to achieve such feat.
