Since the end of the franchise, Efron has gone on to star in several other titles like “Baywatch,” “The Greatest Showman,” “17 Again,” “Neighbors,” and others. His newest project is a reboot of a 1984 horror film adapted from Stephen King’s novel, “Firestarter.”

The 34-year-old recently opened up about his feelings concerning a “High School Musical” reboot. According to Efron, his heart was still in the franchise that brought him to the limelight, and working on a reboot would be “incredible.”

Zac Efron Wants A ‘High School Musical’ Reboot

Efron is still carrying a torch for a “High School Musical” reboot. The actor previously sparked some drama when he didn’t join the rest of the cast for the reunion held in April 2020, but now he’s apparently down for a reboot of the popular Disney movies.

The “High School Musical” franchise was Efron’s breakthrough movie in Hollywood. The actor played the lead character and high school hottie, Troy Bolton, in 2006 for the first movie and reprised his role in 2007 and 2008 for the two sequels. The third installment grossed $253 million worldwide at the box office after its release.

In an interview with E! News, the “High School Musical” alum revealed that his heart was still in the franchise, and working there again would be “amazing.” When about reprising his role in the reboot, Efron said, “Of course, of course. I mean, to have an opportunity in any form to go back and work with that team would be so amazing. My heart is still there. That would be incredible. I hope it happens.”

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Was Released In 2019

While not an actual reboot, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” was released in 2019. The mockumentary was created by Tim Federie for Disney+ and was mainly inspired by the original “High School Musical” series.

The series was set in the school of the original series, East High School, and followed the lives of some teen theater enthusiasts and their desire to launch a musical production in the school titled “High School Musical: The Musical.”

The musical drama was produced by Chorus Boy and Salty Pictures with Disney Channel in tow. The show had famous actors like Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett in attendance. Other stars include Matt Cornett, Larry Sapsrstein, Sofia Wylie, Julia Lester, Frankie Rodriguez, Dara Reneé, Kate Reindeers, and others.

Efron Is In ‘Firestarter’

Although “High School Musical” still holds a prominent place in Efron’s heart, the actor has certainly moved on from his teen basketballer playing role to a more adult, even fatherly role. In his newest movie, “Firestarter,” the 34-year-old will play Andy McGee, the father of Charlie McGee.

Other stars acting alongside Efron include Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Sydney Lemmon. The movie “Firestarter” is based on a similarly named work from Stephen King. The novel was previously released in 1984 with a younger Drew Barrymore as the lead.

Via Entertainment Weekly, the actor and Armstrong talked about working on set on the movie and how whatever set they were working on at the time would be eventually burned down. Efron also mentioned his preference for King and his works. He said, “Stephen King is a hero of mine — I think he creates fascinating worlds.”

‘Firestarter’ Will Be Released On May 13

The anticipated reboot will be available in theaters on May 13. It will also be released on the Peacock streaming platform on the same day. The premise followed Armstrong, known for her role in “American Horror Story,” as the lead character, Charlie. The character has the amazing ability to start fires using her mind.

Efron said about the movie, “I play the dad, and Ryan plays my daughter Charlie, and then my wife is played by Sydney Lemmon. We are working with our daughter as she is developing these supernatural pyrokinetic abilities.”

“She’s got these emotional triggers that cause her to set things on fire, and it’s a superpower that’s sort of not really developed, and we don’t know whether to keep her from using it or to encourage her to learn how to use it,” the “Baywatch” actor continued. “There’s a government agency that’s after her to use her in nefarious ways, turn her into a weapon of some sort.”
