According to the filing, the controversial businessman reportedly “engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4m in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019.” Hunter also allegedly received “more than $7 million in total gross income” between 2016 and mid-2020.

However, he refused to pay his taxes for 2016 to 2019 on time despite having access to the funds. According to CNN, repeatedly missed IRS deadlines to pay his federal taxes, resulting in owing about $2 million.

When he eventually paid it, he borrowed the money from a friend, seemingly insinuating that he didn’t have the funds available. The indictment comes five months after the 53-year-old had a close call with signing a plea deal and putting the matter behind him.

Hunter Biden reportedly agreed to plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors, and prosecutors would recommend no jail time. However, his hope was shattered when the federal judge on the case received scrutiny and there was disagreement over the fine print.

It remains unsure how Hunter’s indictment will affect his father Joe Biden, who wants to run for a second term and stay in the White House for another four years. Nevertheless, the President of the United States has largely denied having any involvement with his son’s overseas business dealings.

This is not Hunter’s first criminal case as he is already facing federal firearm charges in Delaware.
