This year's Global Drug Survey asked more than 32,000 people from over 20 countries, including nearly 900 in Ireland, about their drug and alcohol consumption in 2020.

Ireland was not in the top 10 countries in regards to frequency of drinking, with French people reported as drinking nearly three times a week on average.

New Zealand, the Netherlands, Hungary and the UK rounded out the top five in this category.

However, Ireland did rank as the seventh heaviest drinkers in the world, with Irish respondents saying they got drunk an average of 20 times a year.

This was five more times than the global average of 15.

Australians were found to be the heaviest drinkers in the world, followed by drinkers in Denmark, Finland, the US, the UK and Canada.

The survey also asked people to consider if they regretted getting drunk, defining regret as "wishing you had drunk less or not drunk at all".

On average, respondents from Ireland felt the most regret, regretting it over 28% of the time, followed by Poland, New Zealand, Romania and Spain.
