Is Jim Carrey The Perfect Choice for Oscar Host 2022?

Is Jim Carrey The Perfect Choice for Oscar Host 2022?

As entertaining and successful as they are, most Comedy stars fail to be recognized by the Hollywood awards circuit. Ironically, they are usually the first option when these same award ceremonies need a host.

One iconic comedy star is Jim Carrey, and despite how popular he is and how he has been a household name for years, he is yet to receive any Academy Awards. However, many of his fans think that despite this, he would be the perfect choice to host the upcoming Oscars.

There are many reasons why so many people think Carrey is the perfect host for the ceremony, such as his spontaneity and his infamous history with the Oscars. Read on to find out more about why he should be the host and any competition he has.

Jim Carrey Has History With The Oscars

For the first time since Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars in 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is looking for an Oscar host. It has everyone in the entertainment industry buzzing with who the next host could be, and there are several popular options.

The popular opinion is that the best way for the Academy to get fans talking and push publicity for the event is to make a statement choice. Carrey is the definition of a statement choice, and he is a package of hilarious star power.

He has a funny and sticky history with the Academy that gives him plenty of material for the show. It goes back to the late 1990s when Carrey was a big contender for several awards.
He featured in “Man on the Moon” and The Truman Show, roles that earned him Golden Globe awards but failed to win any Oscars. Many fans believe that this history with the Academy is an ax that Carrey can playfully wield while he hosts the ceremony.

Carrey Is Known For His Unpredictability

From the 1990s Carrey’s signature attribute was his unpredictability. He often performed wild and impromptu stunts at events, whether it was an interview, an appearance on a talk show, or when he was a host or presenter at an awards show.

A good example is when he tried to kiss Will Smith while presenting at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards. Granted, Carrey has significantly calmed over the years, but he still has those elements of unpredictability and spontaneity that could serve the Oscars well.

He is also excellent at improvising, as evidenced by his background as a stand-up comedian and in the show “In Living Color.” He also recently featured in an episode of Saturday Night Live, and it proved that his ability to pull in a live crowd is better than ever.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Popularized Carrey Again

In the early and mid-2000s, Carrey was one of Hollywood’s most famous movie stars. However, as the years passed, his box office appeal and popularity ebbed and flowed, and he was unable to headline any blockbuster until recently.

He has featured in non-mainstream projects such as the film “I Love You Phillip Morris” and the show “Kidding.” In 2020, “Sonic the Hedgehog” was released, and it propelled Carrey back into the spotlight for his outstanding performance as Dr. Robotnik.

His performance was a reminder of how excellent a performer he is, and it triggered nostalgia for his comedic style for many of his fans. “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is scheduled for release anytime from April this year, and it would be perfect timing if Carrey landed the Oscar hosting gig.

Tom Holland Has Also Expressed Interest In Hosting

Carrey’s major opponent in terms of popularity in public opinion for hosting the Oscars is Tom Holland. With the recent release of Spiderman: No Way Home, which is easily the biggest blockbuster film of last year and so far, this year, Holland is currently everyone’s favorite actor.

While on an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Holland expressed that he would love to host the Oscars. His interviewer asked if he would be open to the idea, and he said, “You asking me about the Oscars – you’re the first person to bring that up – and I’m sitting here going, ‘Of course, I would host the fucking Oscars!'”

I just went to the bathroom, and I was looking at myself in the mirror, and I was like, ‘What kind of fucking idiot wouldn’t host the Oscars?’ Holland continued, “So yeah, if they ask me to, I would, and it would be very fun. I would really enjoy it.”
