Sharon Stone broke down in tears during her acceptance speech for the Courage Award at the recent Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s (WCRF) fundraiser. The “Basic Instinct” actress shared that it took a lot of “courage” for her to donate to the cause because she’d just lost “half” her fortune.

She said, per Page Six, “I know that thing that you have to get on and figure out how to text the money is difficult. I’m a technical idiot, but I can write a f**king check. And right now, that’s courage, too, because I know what’s happening. I just lost half my money to this banking thing, and that doesn’t mean that I’m not here.”

However, Stone didn’t explain precisely what “banking thing” had caused her to lose so much money, but it’s presumably the recent Silicon Valley Bank collapse. The Benefit Gala, where the actress opened up about her loss, was held in Beverly Hills and had other star guests like Rachel Zoe and Rebel Wilson.

Silicon Valley Bank Was Shut Down

Last week, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation shut down the Silicon Valley Bank, a move that shocked many. The decision was taken after the bank revealed it had experienced a $1.8 billion loss after it sold its bond holdings for $21 billion.

According to HuffPost, after the announcement, thousands of customers hurriedly withdrew their money from the bank, which affected huge companies like BuzzFeed and many others. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has since reacted to the SVB collapse by unsurprisingly blaming it on society’s “wokeness.”

However, President Joe Biden issued a statement that the bank’s executives should face heavy fines and bans for their actions. He later assured Americans with money in SVB that the country’s “banking system is safe.” Biden also stated that people’s deposits would “be there when you need them.”

Her Brother Recently Passed Away From Heart Disease

During her speech at the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s fundraiser event, Stone also mentioned the recent death of her brother, Patrick Stone. Patrick, who lost a son, River, to total organ failure, died last month from heart disease.

The “Disaster Artist” actress said, “My brother just died, and that doesn’t mean that I’m not here. This is not an easy time for any of us.” She continued, per Page Six, “This is a hard time in the world, but I’m telling you what, I’m not having some politician tell me what I can and cannot do, how I can and cannot live, and what the value of my life is and is not. So stand up. Stand up and say what you’re worth. I dare you. That’s what courage is.”

In 2021, Stone spoke on her nephew River’s health condition on social media about a week before his death, calling for fans to pray for healing. She posted a photo of the baby hooked up to various machines and captioned it, “My nephew and godson River Stone was found in his crib w total organ failure today. Please pray for him. We need a miracle.”

Sharon Stone’s Health Journey

Stone herself has had multiple surgeries to battle various health issues. In 2001, the actress had surgery to remove benign tumors from her breast, which she called “gigantic, bigger than my breast alone.” Stone also claimed that during breast reconstructive surgery, the surgeon had given her bigger implants without permission.

She wrote about the experience in her memoir, which read, “He had changed my body without my knowledge or consent.” In November 2022, Stone revealed she was misdiagnosed with Cancer until surgery revealed it was only a “large fibroid tumor.”

During a conversation with People Magazine at the fundraiser, Stone reflected on the misdiagnosis and removal surgery. The 65-year-old also revealed that she’d had another surgery to remove some breast tissue, which she kept private from the public and fans.
